From at (“water”) + -yot (“a thing abundantly owning...”) + -tzin (“diminutive”). From Proto-Nahuan *aayootl, from Proto-Uto-Aztecan *aya-wɨt-ta (“big tortoise”). Cognate with Classical Nahuatl āyōtl (“turtle, tortoise”).
