Etymology

Cognate with Latvian elks, Gothic 𐌰𐌻𐌷𐍃 (alhs, temple). The generally accepted etymology derives this from Proto-Indo-European *h₂lek- (to protect), but it could very well be from a non-IE substrate language.[1]
