Zaltbommel

English

Proper noun

Zaltbommel

  1. A city in Gelderland, Netherlands.
  2. A municipality of Gelderland, Netherlands.

Dutch

Etymology

First attested as in bomala in 850. Etymology uncertain. Potentially a compound of zout (salt) and a compound element derived from Old Dutch bom (tree) and lo (light forest). The element zout potentially refers to trade in salt or, alternatively, to a tidal bore that drove seawater to the city. The interpretation of the first element as Proto-Germanic *salah- (willow, Salix) is incorrect. Compare Maasbommel.
