Potentially attested as de bumele in 1144, attested with certainty as masebomel in 1294-1295. Etymology uncertain. Potentially a compound of Old Dutch bom (“tree”) and lo (“light forest”). The hydronym Maas was added later to distinguish the settlement from Zaltbommel.
