Nieuwaal

Dutch

Etymology

First attested as nivelen in 1146. Perhaps from Old Dutch *niuwal, derived from either Proto-Germanic *niwialhô- (hollow, low-lying land) (cognate to Old English niwel (leaning forward, steep)) or *niwialha- (new house). Local folk etymology erroneously interprets the toponym as a compound of nieuw (new) and the hydronym Waal. Compare Aalst, Elst, Maasniel, Niel, Niel-bij-As, Nivele and Waldniel.
