Wijthmen
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as wytmen in 1207. Etymology uncertain. The proposed derivation from Middle Dutch wedeme (“donation made to the Church, rectory”) is impossible. The first element of the toponym may be Middle Dutch wide (“basket willow, Salix viminalis”). Compare Bathmen, Berkum, Besthmen, Diermen, Fortmond, Giethmen, Helpman, Hertme, Ratum, Reutum, Thamen and Wachtum.
Pronunciation
