First attested as in riatnon in the late 10th century. Derived from Proto-Germanic *hreud (“reed”) suffixed with a collectivising suffix. Compare Bathmen, Berkum, Besthmen, Diermen, Fortmond, Giethmen, Helpman, Hertme, Ratum, Thamen, Wachtum and Wijthmen.
