Etymology
First attested as berses in 1207. Compound of wester (“western, west-”) and a Germanic term cognate to or directly derived from Latin bersa (“enclosed hunting grounds”). The element wester was added to distinguish the settlement from Middelbeers and Oostelbeers. Compare Bears, Beers, Beersdonk, Beerze and Besselaar.
