First attested as bersselare in 1482. Derived from either a Germanic term cognate to or directly from Latin bersa (“enclosed hunting grounds”) and laar (“intensively cultivated forest”). Compare Bears, Beers, Beersdonk, Beerze, Middelbeers, Oostelbeers and Westelbeers.
