First attested as versschendyck en versserdyck in 1450. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps a compound of either Middle Dutch varre (“young bull”) and sele (“hall house”) or vaars (“young cow”) and lo (“light forest”). Compare Peursum, Poederoijen, Poeijers, Sterksel, Vaarle, Varsen, Varssel, Varsselder, Varsseveld, Ten Vorsel and Bolsele.
