Varsseveld

Dutch

Etymology

First attested as versnevelde in 1152. Perhaps a compound of Middle Dutch varse (young cow) and veld (field). Another etymology explains the first component as Middle Dutch versene (heel), used here as a metaphor for the shape of the field. Compare Peursum, Poederoijen, Poeijers, Sterksel, Vaarle, Vaarsel, Varsen, Varssel, Varsselder, Ten Vorsel and Bolsele.
