First attested as de spelde in 1313. The toponym is etymologically related to speld (“needle”), spil (“spindle”) and spijl (“spike, rod”). There is no etymological relationship to spel (“game”). Compare Hoog Spul, Laag Spul, Spoolde and Speldhurst.
