Laag Spul

Dutch

Etymology

First attested as de Spulle in 1542. Etymology unknown. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from a compound of Middle Dutch spur (path, road) and lo (light forest) or an ablauted variant of Middle Dutch spel (goods, possession, market stall). The element laag (low, lower) was added to distinguish the settlement from Hoog Spul. Compare Speuld, Spoolde and Speldhurst.
