Etymology

From Middle High German smaract, from Latin smaragdus, from Ancient Greek σμάραγδος (smáragdos), μάραγδος (máragdos), from a Semitic language. Also written schmaragd in Early Modern German, and still widely so pronounced until the diffusion of the Siebs standard.
