Etymology

Morphologically *xyt- + *-rъ. The stem *xyt- is a zero-grade variant of *xvatiti (to grasp, to catch). Of the same origin is also Russian хищник (xiščnik, predator). Ultimately, the lemma likely shares the same origin as *xъtěti (to want, to intend).
