Proto-Slavic
Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wéselas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁wes-e-lo-s, from *h₁wésus (“good”); as for the suffix, compare *tęželъ and *debelъ. Cognate with Latvian vesels (“healthy, whole”), Lithuanian vẽselas (“joyous, happy”), Old Prussian wessals (“cheerful”), Sanskrit वसु (vásu, “excellent, great”) and Avestan 𐬬𐬊𐬵𐬎 (vohu, “good, advantageous, suitable”).
