Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wéselas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁wes-e-lo-s, from *h₁wésus (good); as for the suffix, compare *tęželъ and *debelъ. Cognate with Latvian vesels (healthy, whole), Lithuanian vẽselas (joyous, happy), Old Prussian wessals (cheerful), Sanskrit वसु (vásu, excellent, great) and Avestan 𐬬𐬊𐬵𐬎 (vohu, good, advantageous, suitable).
