Cognate with Proto-Germanic *stubbaz (> Old Norse stubbr m (“trunk?/stump of tree”)), *stubbô (> Old Norse stubbi (“stump”), Middle High German stubbe (“stump”)), Ancient Greek στύπος (stúpos), στύφω (stúphō).
