From Proto-Balto-Slavic *śer(s)nos, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱer(H)-no-m. Cognate with Latvian sȩ̄rsna (hoarfrost), Lithuanian šerkšnas (hoarfrost), Old Armenian սառն (saṙn, ice), Proto-Germanic *herzną.
