Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *rḗˀźtei, from Proto-Indo-European *wréh₁ǵyeti, from *wreh₁ǵ-. Akin to Lithuanian rė́žti (to cut), Latvian riezt (to sprout) and further to Ancient Greek ῥήγνῡμι (rhḗgnūmi).
