Proto-Slavic

Etymology

Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)per- (to spring, to sprout) + *-ǫtъ, related to Proto-Slavic *prędati (to lead), Proto-Germanic *sprintaną (to prance).

Vasmer and Machek suggest original meaning leapshoot, sprout with similar semantic shift as Russian побе́г (pobég, flight; fig. sprout). Possibly related to Proto-Slavic *prytь (outbreak), Proto-Germanic *sprutô (sprout).
