From Proto-Balto-Slavic *palˀnas, from Proto-Indo-European *polh₂-no-s, metathesis of *ploh₂-no-s, from *pleh₂- (“flat”). Baltic cognates include Latvian plāns (“thin, delicate, poor”), Lithuanian plónas (“thin, delicate, rare”).
