Proto-Slavic
Etymology
From earlier *pьsrъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *piś-ras, from Proto-Indo-European *piḱ-rós, from the root *peyḱ- (“to mark, paint”). Morphologically *pьsati + *-rъ.
Direct cognate is Ancient Greek πικρός (pikrós, “sharp, pointed”). Semantically close to Ancient Greek ποικίλος (poikílos), Proto-Germanic *faihaz.
