Probably inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *gagalas. Cognates include Lithuanian gagalas, Old Prussian gegalis, probably Old Norse gagl, Hittite [script needed] (kallikalli-). By surface analysis, *gogotati + *-olъ.
