Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gad-, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰodʰ-, from the root *gʰedʰ-. Cognate with Latvian gadîtiês (“to happen”), Lithuanian guõdas (“honor, worship, hospitality”), Latvian gòds (“honor, wedding, banquet”), Proto-Germanic *gōdaz (“good”) (whence English good).
