Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gad-, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰodʰ-, from the root *gʰedʰ-. Cognate with Latvian gadîtiês (to happen), Lithuanian guõdas (honor, worship, hospitality), Latvian gòds (honor, wedding, banquet), Proto-Germanic *gōdaz (good) (whence English good).
