Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *gúrˀtla, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷr̥h₃-dʰlom. Morphologically parsable as *gъr- + *-dlo. Baltic cognates include Lithuanian gurklỹs (crop), gùrklis (crop), Old Prussian gurcle. Further akin to Proto-Germanic *kwerkō (throat), Latin gurges (gorge).
