From Proto-Balto-Slavic *dabas, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰh₂ebʰ-o-s, from *dʰh₂ebʰ- (to model, to fashion). Cognate with Latvian daba (nature), Lithuanian dabà (habit, characteristic).
