Etymology
Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *dʰergʰnós (“sloetree, blackbush”). Cognate with Proto-Celtic *dragenā (“blackthorn”) (whence Irish draighean, Welsh draen) and Ancient Greek τέρχνος (térkhnos, “twig, young shoot”).
