Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *burštjás, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰr̥s-t-yós, from *bʰers- (“top, tip, point”). Akin to Proto-Germanic *burstiz (“bristle”), Proto-Germanic *bruskaz (“tuft, thicket, underbrush”), Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰr̥štíš (“top, point”).
