Etymology

Uncertain. Equivalent to *šiti (to sew) + *-pъ, hence, a possible derivative of Proto-Indo-European *syuh₁- (to sew). Alternatively, related to Proto-Indo-Iranian *kšwipáti (to cast off, to fling) and Proto-Germanic *swaipaną (to sweep), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ksweybʰ-.
