Proto-Germanic
Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *skey- (“to split”) apparently with the suffix *-tis (= *-þiz), but the o-grade is unexpected; perhaps *skaiþaną points to a verb *skóyteti with a *-t- extension already in the stem, so this would be an old i-stem derivation from there. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
