Surface derivation from *sauzaz (dry) + *-janą. May be formally cognate with Proto-Slavic *sušiti (to make dry) (Proto-Balto-Slavic *sáušīˀtei) and Sanskrit शोषयति (śoṣáyati, to parch, make dry, cause to wither, sear).
