From Proto-Indo-European *ln̥dʰ-éh₂[1], from *léndʰ-s ~ *ln̥dʰ-és, from *lendʰ- (land, heath).[2] Cognate with Proto-Germanic *lundaz (grove) (whence Old Norse lundr), Proto-Germanic *landą (land).
