Etymology

From lallen (“babble, prattle”) +‎ Name (“name”). A technical term in onomatology, first coined in 1896 (for ancient Greek) by Paul Kretschmer, Einleitung in die Geschichte der Griechischen Sprache, p. 334. Used for German names by A. Socin, Mittelhochdeutsches Namenbuch (1903).

  1. (onomastics) a hypocoristic form of a given name which is phonologically simplified in child language but enters adult use. Especially in ancient names of Asia Minor (in Anatolian languages such as Phrygian, Luwian, Hittite), but also used for other languages.
