From northern Middle High German klīster, an originally Central German word, possibly from Old High German *klīstar, from Proto-West Germanic *klīstr, from Proto-Germanic *klīstrą (paste, goo), ultimately from the root of Klei (clay). Cognate with German Low German Kliester, Dutch klijster, Saterland Frisian Klíester, Scots cleester. Related also to English clay.
