From Ottoman Turkish اصفهان (İsfahān) and Classical Persian اِصْفَهَان (isfahān), ultimately from Old Persian *spādānaʰ (“army, adj.”) or *spādānām (“of the armies”), from 𐎿𐎱𐎠𐎭 (spādaʰ, “army”),[1] from Proto-Iranian *cwáHdaH (“army”), q.v.
