Etymology

Borrowed from Iranian Persian خوزستان (xuzestân), from خوز (xuz), name of the indigenous people of the region, and the suffix ـستان (-estân, -stan), or borrowed wholly from Middle Persian hwcstʾn' / 𐭧𐭥𐭰𐭮𐭲𐭭 (Hūzestān, literally land of Hūz), itself from hwc (Hūz) + -stʾn' (-estān, -stan). The first component is from Old Persian 𐎢𐎺𐎩 (u-v-j /ʰūja-/, Elam, Elamite), or from the name of Susa. Compare Ancient Greek Οὔξιοι (Oúxioi), Classical Syriac ܒܝܬ ܗܘܙܝܐ (Bêṯ Hūzāyē), Old Armenian խուժ (xuž, wild, savage), Armenian խուժան (xužan, mob). The city name Ahvaz is also related.
