First attested as ekmunde in 1167. Derived from the toponym Egmond (of unknown etymology) with the identifier aan den Hoef (derived from Middle Dutch huue (“piece of land of a certain size”)). The identifier was added to distinguish the settlement from Egmond aan Zee and Egmond-Binnen.
