Etymology
First attested as thuuina in 838. Likely derived from Old Dutch thufina (“hillock”). There are indications that the original meaning of the name was forgotten fairly quickly, as is evidenced by an inhabitant being called de Columba ("of the Pigeons", with the original name being confused for duiven (“pigeons”)) in a text from 1297. Compare Duiveland, Duivendijke, Duivendrecht and Duivenvoorde.
