Etymology

First attested as doevendrecht in 1308. From Middle Dutch Dovendrecht. Compound of Middle Dutch Doeve (a personal name) and -drecht (ferry, watercourse). The first element was gradually reinterpreted to the plural form of duif (pigeon).
