First attested as doevendrecht in 1308. From Middle Dutch Dovendrecht. Compound of Middle Dutch Doeve (“a personal name”) and -drecht (“ferry, watercourse”). The first element was gradually reinterpreted to the plural form of duif (“pigeon”).
