Etymology

From being a mutant version of the BA.1 variant and the older designation B.1.1.529.2. Pango notation does not officially support 4 sublevels, leading to a need to renumber "B.1.1.529.2", thus shortened to a new base "BA" for "B.1.1.529" and ".2" becoming "BA.2"

Proper noun

BA.2

  1. (virology, neologism) A subvariant of the Omicron variant. A highly transmissible variant of the SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus, which causes COVID-19; which became dominant at the turn of the year 2021/2022 in India.
