Etymology
Inherited from Old East Slavic имати (imati), from Proto-Slavic *jьmati, formed as a suffix from the now-uncommon verb іма́ць (imácʹ, “to take; to possess”). Related to мець (mjecʹ). Compare Ukrainian -йма́ти (-jmáty), itself related to ма́ти (máty); as well as archaic Russian има́ть (imátʹ), later reanalyzed as -нима́ть (-nimátʹ).

Suffix
-йма́ць • (-jmácʹ) (perfective -ня́ць)
