Etymology
PIE word |
---|
*kʷséps |
Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *kʷséps (“night”), though the existence of the PIE word is sometimes disputed. Cognates include Sanskrit क्षप् (kṣáp), Avestan 𐬑𐬴𐬀𐬞𐬀𐬥 (xṣ̌apan) and Old Persian 𐎧𐏁𐎱 (x-š-p /xšap-/) (Persian شب (šab)).
