Borrowed from Middle Chinese (kɨɐŋ) or Thai ขิง (kǐng). A wanderwort, compare Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kjaŋ (ginger), (q.v. for more); Proto-Vietic *s-gəːŋ ~ s-kəːŋ (ginger) (> Vietnamese gừng / gầng); Proto-Tai *χiːŋᴬ (ginger) (> Thai ขิง (kǐng), Lao ຂີງ (khīng), Shan ၶိင် (khǐng)).
