Etymology

First attested in the Hunminjeong'eum haerye (訓民正音解例 / 훈민정음해례), 1446, as Middle Korean 납 (Yale: nàp).

이 (-i) is a common suffix added to animal names. The first element of the modern form was attached in the seventeenth century as ᄌᆡᆫ (coyn-), and is of unknown origin.
