First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean ᄲᆞᆯ리〮 (Yale: spòllí), equivalent to modern 빠르— (ppareu-, “to be quick”) + 이 (-i, adverb-deriving suffix).
