Etymology

Attested since the 4th century CE.

It is a phono-semantic matching of an Iranian form *koswi, *košwi, *gošwi (Laufer, 1967). Compare Middle Persian gšnyc (gišnīz, coriander), kšnyc (kišnīz), whence Modern Persian گشنیز (gešniz, coriander). Also compare Sanskrit कुस्तुम्बरी (kustumbarī).
