Etymology
The name of a port near present-day Kanagawa-ku in Kanagawa Prefecture that served as a stop on the Tōkaidō, the historical route from Edo to Kyoto during the Edo period. The name is perhaps related to 上無川 (Kaminashigawa), a river near Edo. Attested from the 17th century. Variously written as かな川, 金川, 狩野川, or かぬ川 in historical texts.
