Etymology
From 直し (naoshi), stem of 直す (“to rectify”), but more literally, "to make straight", in reference to the straightness. Compare Latin rēctificāre (“to make straight; to rectify”).
Noun
直衣 or 直衣 • (nōshi or naoshi) ←なほし (nafosi)?
直衣 • (chokui)
- (clothing) round-collared, skirted over-robe worn as daily wear by Japanese nobles from the Heian era. Unlike the 袍 (hō) the colour was not rank-prescribed. By custom white figured silk, lined with 二藍 (“overdye-purple”) in the winter, and woven-purple silk-gauze in the summer. Worn with 指貫 (sashinuki) and 烏帽子 (eboshi).
