Glyph origin

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *pin) : semantic (water) + phonetic (OC *mpin)

Etymology

According to Schuessler (2007), this is a Southeast Asian etymon. Compare Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *te(m)biŋ (border, edge, shore, bank) & Proto-Monic *t(r)mɓaɲ (rim, edge; lips).

Unclear, if possible, connection with Tibeto-Burman lexical items: Lepcha ᰓᰧᰶ (, edge, border) & ᰜᰤᰴ ᰓᰧᰶ (lyaŋ bí, utmost limit of a place); Tibetan ཕྱི (phyi) ~ ཕྱིན (phyin, outside) (unless the Tibetan items belong to (OC *piʔ, “behind > outside?”)) (ibid.).

(OC *pin, *bin) is possibly its endopassive derivative. (OC -) ~ (OC *pʰɯːn, *bɯn) is possibly its vocalic variant (ibid.).
