Glyph origin
Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *pin) : semantic 水 (“water”) + phonetic 賓 (OC *mpin)
Etymology
According to Schuessler (2007), this is a Southeast Asian etymon. Compare Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *te(m)biŋ (“border, edge, shore, bank”) & Proto-Monic *t(r)mɓaɲ (“rim, edge; lips”).
Unclear, if possible, connection with Tibeto-Burman lexical items: Lepcha ᰓᰧᰶ (bí, “edge, border”) & ᰜᰤᰴ ᰓᰧᰶ (lyaŋ bí, “utmost limit of a place”); Tibetan ཕྱི (phyi) ~ ཕྱིན (phyin, “outside”) (unless the Tibetan items belong to 比 (OC *piʔ, “behind > outside?”)) (ibid.).
瀕 (OC *pin, *bin) is possibly its endopassive derivative. 墳 (OC -) ~ 濆 (OC *pʰɯːn, *bɯn) is possibly its vocalic variant (ibid.).
