望 | 月 |
もち Grade: 4 |
つき > づき Grade: 1 |
kun’yomi |
Compound of 望 (mochi) + 月 (tsuki, “moon”).[2][1] The mochi element is of uncertain derivation. It probably derives from the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative or stem form”) of verb 持つ (motsu, “to have, to possess; to keep, to maintain”), but the semantic relationship remains unclear. The tsuki changes to zuki as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
